Kaua‘i Shrimp acquired by O‘ahu-based company Aloun Farms
Kauaʻi Shrimp has been acquired by O‘ahu-based company Aloun Farms, bringing ownership of the Kekaha business into the state of Hawaiʻi while preserving its 31 local jobs.
Until now, Kauaʻi Shrimp has most recently been owned by Netherlands-based corporation Hendrix Genetics. Kaua‘i Shrimp produces over half a million pounds of Pacific white leg shrimp every year on its 238-acre farm on the West Side of the Garden Isle. The shrimp – which are shipped fresh, chilled or frozen – are locally grown, harvested, processed and packaged.
“Aloun Farms has been giving back to our community long before this acquisition, donating countless pounds of fresh local produce through our Kekaha Agriculture Association, our local food bank and other organizations to support our Kauaʻi families,” said Grant Kunishima, general manager of Kauaʻi Shrimp.
Founded in 1977 on five acres in Lualualei Valley on Oʻahu, the family-owned Aloun Farms cultivates a combined 2,500 acres on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. Aloun Farms supplies the state’s largest wholesalers and retail outlets.
As Aloun Farms expands its footprint on Kauaʻi, it will also broaden its range of produce
offerings on Kauaʻi and across the islands. The company plans to expand Kaua‘i Shrimp’s currently unused land with other aquaculture species.
“My father Aloun Sou committed our family farm to reducing Hawaiʻi’s dependence on
imported food, and I am humbled to welcome Kauaʻi Shrimp into our family business to
diversify our efforts to further his commitment,” said Alec Sou, president and CEO of Aloun
Farms.
The acquisition of Kauaʻi Shrimp is expected to close on October 1, 2024, subject to the
approval of its lessors.
