Kapaʻa brush fire contained; roads reopen

4:20 p.m. update: Kaua‘i police have reopened Kapa‘a Bypass and Olohena roads as of 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, as firefighters have cleared the scene.

The investigation of the brush fire remain ongoing at this time.

3:10 p.m. update: County of Kauaʻi officials announced that the fire is now contained, but crews remain on scene to monitor hot spots.

The brush fire ignited off Kapa‘a Bypass Road Tuesday afternoon, July 16, and Kaua‘i Fire Department crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:15 p.m.

No injuries have been reported.

The entire Kapa‘a Bypass Road at both north and south entrances at Kūhiō Highway will remain closed by Kauaʻi police while firefighters remain on scene.

Olohena Road, between the Kaapuni Road junction and the Kapa‘a Bypass Road roundabout, also remains closed at this time.

Firefighters with the Kaiākea, Kapa‘a, Līhu‘e fire stations, Tanker 1, Air 1, Air 2, and the on-duty battalion chief are responding to this incident.

KFD is also receiving support from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Parks and Recreation. Personnel with the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency are also monitoring the fire and supporting this response.

1:20 p.m. update: Olohena Road, between the Kaapuni Road junction and the Kapa‘a Bypass Road roundabout, is also closed as crews continue to respond to the brush fire. The Kapa‘a Bypass Road remains closed at both north and south entrances of Kūhiō Highway.

Original post: Fire crews are currently responding to a brush fire reported off Kapa‘a Bypass Road, near the roundabout, Kaua‘i County reported at 12:45 p.m.

Kaua‘i police have closed the entire Kapa‘a Bypass Road at both the north and south entrances of Kūhiō Highway. Motorists are advised to avoid the area at this time.

Reports of this brush fire come 24 hours after a blaze ignited between Kaumakani and Hanapēpē where 1,100 acres were scorched. Fire officials reported early this morning the West Kaua‘i blaze is under control.

KPD ask that the public not call 911 for updates but instead call (808) 241-1725 to ensure dispatch remains available for emergency calls.
