Kaua‘i Police Department encourages safe celebrations as graduation nears

As graduation season kicks off, many high school seniors are beginning a new chapter, and the Kaua‘i Police Department wants to ensure their transition is a safe one.

“The Kaua‘i Police Department extends our warmest congratulations to the class of 2024. We also want to remind those celebrating to do so responsibly,” said Assistant Chief Kalani Ke.

“Let’s ensure that this graduation season is safe for everyone in our community,” Ke continued. “Parents, please talk with your children about the life-threatening risks of drinking and driving. Your example could save their life and the lives of others.”

Responsible driving is important every day, but heightened awareness during this time is vital for community safety and, most importantly, preventing the unnecessary loss of life.

This year, Kaua‘i has experienced four traffic-related fatalities.

Officers are stepping up enforcement measures to proactively address unsafe driving and will be conducting checks for drivers who are under the influence, distracted by cell phones, not using seat belts and committing other traffic violations.

Remember to practice safe driving habits with these tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

• Pay Attention: Distracted driving, especially texting or using social media while driving, is common among drivers. Passengers can also be a distraction in the car.
  
• Slow Down: Faster speeds rob drivers of the extra reaction time they may need to avoid a crash. Choosing to speed can lead to deadly consequences, even for experienced drivers.
  
• Stay Alert: Make sure you get home before exhaustion hits or work out a plan with friends to stay the night in a safe place so you won’t be driving drowsy.
  
• Buckle Up: Remember to buckle up, every trip, every time, and ask your passengers to do the same.
  
• Drive Sober or Designate a Responsible Driver: It is illegal for people under the age of 21 to consume alcohol, and it is illegal for anyone to drink and drive. If you have consumed alcohol, hand your keys to a sober driver so you can get home safely.
