Kaua‘i man arrested after allegedly biting a nurse last year
A man was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly assaulting a nurse last year at the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.
Chay Ramirez, 22, of ‘Ele‘ele, was transported to the hospital on Nov. 29, 2023, after first responders found him unconscious. Once awake, Ramirez allegedly made threatening remarks toward hospital staff and bit a nurse as she was attempting to administer medication.
“We hold healthcare professionals in high regard for their selfless devotion and expertise. It is unacceptable for them to feel unsafe when they are dedicated to saving lives and promoting well-being,” said Chief Todd Raybuck.
Ramirez was arrested by officers and released pending investigation. This happens when more time is needed beyond the maximum 48 hours of holding in police custody, for police to investigate the case before formal charges are made.
After further investigation, the findings were submitted to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
A warrant was issued, and Ramirez was arrested on Wednesday for second-degree assault. His bail is set at $25,000.
Ramirez is scheduled to appear in 5th Circuit Court for an arraignment and plea on March 5.
“Assault is a highly punishable offense that carries significant repercussions,” Raybuck said. “The Kaua‘i Police Department firmly stands against any acts of violence targeted at healthcare professionals and will take necessary action against such behavior. It is imperative that our healthcare professionals are not subjected to any form of threat or intimidation while carrying out their duties.”
