Flash flood watch goes into effect Sunday for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau
A flash flood watch has been issued for Kaua’i and Ni’ihau from the evening of Jan. 7 through the afternoon Jan. 9.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu says flash flooding will be possible as a cold front moves over the Hawaiian Islands during that time period, making conditions increasingly favorable for the development of heavy rain.
The heaviest rain is expected initially for Kaua‘i beginning late Sunday before spreading down the island chain Monday. A few thunderstorms will also be possible.
The public is advised that flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas could be closed because of elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas also could receive more significant flooding and property damage because of rapid runoff.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
