Update: High surf advisory canceled
Update at 3:56 p.m. Dec. 6: The high surf advisory that was in effect for north-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau has been canceled.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, surf along those shorelines has fallen below advisory levels.
Update at 7:13 a.m. Dec. 6: West-facing shores are no longer included in the high surf advisory for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
According to the National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu, north-northwest swell heights will decrease through the day and surf heights along west-facing shores are expected to remain just below advisory thresholds.
The advisory remains in effect for north-facing shores of both islands.
Original post from 1 a.m. Dec. 6: A high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau is in effect till 6 p.m. tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, surf will be 18 to 22 feet along north-facing shores and 12 to 16 feet along west-facing shores.
Beachgoers should expect strong-breaking waves and powerful currents. Waves breaking in channel entrances may make navigating the channels dangerous.
Large breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous. Know your limits and swim near a lifeguard.
