Kaua‘i firefighters respond to multiple blazes this week; no injuries were reported

No injuries were reported following multiple fires on Kaua‘i this week.

The first fire was reported on Tuesday shortly after 9:40 p.m. in Kekaha. Kaua‘i firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire reported near Kaumuali‘i Highway across from St. Theresa Parish. When they arrived on scene, crews found a 10-by-20-foot brush fire near the beach across from the parish. The blaze was quickly controlled and extinguished.

The scene was cleared shortly after 10 p.m. No structures were damaged, and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

The second fire was reported shortly before 12:20 a.m. on Thursday near a bus stop on Apopo Road in Kapa‘a.

According to a preliminary report, Kaua‘i fire personnel arrived on scene and discovered an area 20 feet by 30 feet on fire. Crews quickly knocked down and extinguished the fire. However, the bus stop was damaged resulting in an estimated $1,000 in damages.

Crews cleared the scene shortly before 12:25 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Later that morning, shortly after 5:10 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire near the Friendship House on Kūhiō Highway in Kapa‘a.

Personnel with the Kaiākea fire station arrived shortly before 5:15 a.m. and discovered a 20-by-20-foot brush fire that quickly grew. The blaze was then controlled, knocked down and extinguished.

Crews on scene later determined that a gas tank was leaking, prompting the closure of Kūhiō Highway from Kawaihau Road to Mailihuna Road. Kaua‘i Police rerouted traffic through Kawaihau Road and Mailihuna Road for approximately two hours.

After expelling the contents of the gas tank, Hawai‘i Gas was notified to retrieve it.

No structures were damaged. The scene was cleared at approximately 8:10 a.m., and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
