Local food access and production nonprofit Mālama Kaua‘i is hiring for two positions, including kalo (taro) specialist, and part-time food hub packer and driver.

Mālama Kaua‘i is seeking a passionate and culturally-grounded individual to support a two-year project to ensure that kalo continues to reclaim its rightful place in Kaua‘i’s daily island food culture.

The kalo specialist will support the development, aggregation, processing and distribution of kalo products to schools and commercial customers, working with several kalo farmers and product producers across the island, while supporting the operations of the overall project as needed.

Mālama Kaua‘i’s food hub programs support commercial, institutional, and consumer buyers all over Kaua‘i in purchasing local food through kauailocalfood.com. It currently purchases from more than 130 farmers, ranchers, and food producers across the island to support the growth and sustainability of the islandʻs local food system. Mālama Kaua‘i also supports a variety of keiki and kūpuna feeding programs across the island.

Mālama Kaua‘i’s packers and drivers work on Wednesdays and Thursdays to help intake food and get it where it needs to go. The nonprofit is looking to fill its North Shore route, which has a driving range of Līhu‘e to Wainiha. Training is included but must have basic knowledge of local fruits and vegetables, a great attitude, ability to lift heavy boxes of produce repeatedly, and strong driving skills.
