Kaua‘i Community College to host express enrollment night for trade programs

Kaua‘i Community College offers a large variety of trades programs for students and community members seeking certificates or degrees to increase their employability — and it’s not too late to enroll.

An express enrollment night is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the community college’s library to give people one last chance to sign up for trade programs this fall. The event will include admissions, financial aid, academic advising and counseling, career center and Hele Mālama CARES staff.

Some of the most popular programs include automotive technology, carpentry, welding and electronics technology.

“The diversity of trades classes at [Kaua‘i Community College] allowed me to realize that I could make good money performing these types of services,” one student said. “I learned carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, [air conditioning] and refrigeration. I soon got a job that made $45 an hour.”

The trade programs also offer internships to support students as they transition to the workforce and assist in job placement. Internships provide students with first-hand experience while building confidence and enhancing their skills through practical learning.

“The Ka‘ika‘i A‘o program gave me the opportunity to not only enhance my experiential learning, but I was able to also expand skills as well,” said one student. “As a business technology graduate, I was also able to explore other trade options in automotive technology and gain hands-on experience working on campus based projects such as the Jeep Wagoneer project. I recommend this project for Native Hawaiian students to expand their knowledge and learning experiences.”

A high school student taking dual credit college courses through Kaua‘i Community College now said they feel blessed to part of the internships, as the programs provide them with tools to become better in business, marketing and developing creative media content — something the student is excited to learn more about.

“I had the pleasure of working collaboratively with other early college students, who are also Ka‘ika‘i A‘o participants, on various projects such as brochures and flyers to pass out at Kaua‘i [Community College] events,” that student said. “What I like is that I have freedom in learning. Hawaiian culture and language is something that I am passionate about, and beyond workforce training, I get to creatively assist in cultural-based activities that support the Native Hawaiian participants in the Ka‘ika‘i A‘o Projects.”
