Police officers on island of Molokaʻi shoot and kill 40-year-old with machete
A 40-year-old man wielding a machete was shot and killed Sunday by Maui police officers during a confrontation on the island of Molokaʻi.
The man was identified as Nathaniel Naki of Kaunakakai.
The two officers had been responding to a report of a temporary restraining order violation at 7:41 a.m. near mile 18.5 of the Kamehameha V Highway in Wailua, Molokaʻi.
Police say the man advanced toward the officers. One officer deployed his taser, but when that proved ineffective both officers fired their weapons.
Officers performed life-saving measures until medic personnel arrived on the scene, according to department reports.
Naki was transported to the Molokaʻi General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure.
There were no other injuries reported and the investigation is ongoing.
