One new COVID-related death occurred earlier this week, Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami announced during the county’s briefing Thursday, May 19.
The victim was a 90-year-old male resident who had been hospitalized.
Kawakami reported that the Kaua‘i District Health Office has over a dozen active health clusters under investigation. Most of which are in the workplace.
“We have several clusters among school-aged children, many of which appear to have had in-school transmission,” the mayor said.
Kawakami reminded the public to use their best judgment when it comes to the safety of themselves and their families.
The island’s case count remains elevated. Kawakami said the seven-day case average is 63 cases a day, up from 48 last week. The actual number of cases is likely much higher due to the use of home tests. The test positivity rate is 23%, up from 20% last week.
“And this week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control declared that the COVID-19 community spread level in Kaua‘i County is now in the high range,” Kawakami said. “The CDC recommends when the community spread is high, masks should be worn indoors and in public places.”
