Mayor Derek SK Kawakami is hopeful Kaua‘i will move back to Tier 4 by next week after a COVID-19 outbreak earlier this month.

“Our island experienced a surge in cases that we hadn’t seen before. It affected our residents and many of our children,” Kawakami said during a bi-weekly COVID-19 update on Thursday, May 20. “Thankfully, our community worked together to take quick action and gain control of the outbreak.”

Kawakami said if residents can keep up the momentum, the county is on track to ease restrictions back to Tier 4 by early next week.

Additionally, Kawakami said, he is working with state partners at potentially adjusting the tier system based on vaccination rates, which would allow businesses to increase capacity and residents to have larger gatherings.

As of Thursday, May 20, two new COVID-19 cases were reported. There are currently 11 active cases and 23 individuals in health-directed quarantine.
