Kaua‘i surfer advances in Olympics competition; next round postponed by bad weather
Kaua‘i surfer Tatiana Weston-Webb on Sunday advanced to Round Three of the 2024 Olympics women’s surfing competition, earning a combined total of 9.50 points to send Nicaragua’s Candelaria Resano (3.30 points) packing.
The 28-year-old Weston-Webb – although a longtime resident of the Garden Isle – represents her birth country of Brazil in the Olympic Games.
She is now set to go up against Team USA’s Caitlin Simmers in Tahiti. But Round Three – initially scheduled to take place Monday – has been postponed due to inclement weather. Olympics officials will decide when the competition will resume on Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Tahiti time.
When the sport of surfing made its Olympics debut four years ago, Weston-Webb was eliminated in Round Three, falling to Amuro Tsuzuki of Japan. Hawai‘i resident and Team USA member Carissa Moore would go on to become the first-ever winner of the Olympic gold medal in women’s shortboard surfing.
