Zonta Club invites Kaua‘i to join Denim Day to support sexual assault survivors

The Zonta Club of Kaua‘i is inviting the Garden Isle community to recognize Denim Day on April 24, when millions of people throughout the world will wear jeans to support sexual assault survivors and provide education about all forms of sexual violence.

Denim Day was created in 1999, after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices held that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. Women of the Italian Parliament protested the decision by wearing jeans at work.

On Kaua‘i, a Denim Day proclamation will be issued on April 24 at 11:30 a.m. in the County of Kauai’s Līhu‘e Civic Center Rotunda.

“Wear denim with your favorite jeans and post a selfie on social media and tag a friend,” the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i recently announced, sharing the hashtags #zontaclubofkauai and #denimday. “There is no excuse and never an invitation to sexual assault or sexual violence.”

Zonta International’s mission is to “Build a Better World for Women and Girls.”
