Injured hikers rescued near Kalalau Trail on Kaua‘i Wednesday
First responders rescued three hikers near the Kalalau Trail on the North Shore of Kaua‘i on Wednesday.
Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a report of two male visitors from Georgia, ages 73 and 41, who fell from the Kalalau Trail at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 28.
Personnel with the Hanalei fire station, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and the on-duty battalion chief responded to the incident.
According to a preliminary report, while en route to the scene, first responders were informed of a female bystander who had assisted the two hikers who fell. Shortly before 1:10 p.m., Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 spotted a person roughly 200 feet below the trail. Upon arrival, rescue personnel located two hikers; one had apparent injuries to the head and body, while the other was a female who did not report any injuries.
Once the first two hikers were rescued, rescue personnel found the third hiker on a hillside. He was assessed for apparent head injuries, airlifted on Air 1, and transported to Princeville Airport to awaiting American Medical Response and KFD personnel.
AMR medics continued treatment of the male hikers, transporting them to Wilcox Medical Center.
The scene was cleared shortly after 6:20 p.m.
