55-year-old pedestrian dies following Po‘ipū traffic incident
A 55-year-old man suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Po‘ipū Road this morning.
According to preliminary police reports, on Feb. 24 at approximately 8:50 a.m., a 2004 Toyota multi-purpose vehicle with two occupants was traveling westbound on Po‘ipū Road in the vicinity of Kiahuna Shopping Center. The vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a 55-year-old male resident of Kalāheo as he was walking along the westbound shoulder. His identity has not yet been released.
Bystanders near the scene found the man unresponsive and began administering CPR. First responders arrived and continued resuscitation efforts while the man was transported to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The occupants of the vehicle were uninjured in the incident.
Po‘ipū Road was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes while the Kauaʽi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Speed and impairment are not suspected factors in the crash, however, the investigation remains ongoing.
This is Kaua‘i’s second traffic fatality of 2024 and remains under investigation.
