Portion of Kaumualiʻi Highway still closed after SUV crashes into utility pole Thursday morning
Kaumualiʻi Highway near Piko Road intersection in Lāwaʻi remains closed following a traffic incident shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday.
A compact SUV veered off the highway and struck a utility pole, which fell and struck another passing vehicle. Kauaʻi police and medics responded to the scene and the driver of the SUV, who was its only occupant, was transported to Wilcox Hospital in Līhuʻe, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash has resulted in an extended closure of the highway while crews work to restore service to the area.
Westbound traffic is being rerouted through Kōloa Road and eastbound traffic is being redirected onto Maluhia Road.
Repairs are ongoing and it could be several hours before the Kaumualiʻi Highway is completely reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
