The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation informs highway users in Wainiha of emergency work requiring a single lane closure and short (intermittent) full closures of Kūhiō Highway between Wainiha Powerhouse Road and Alamihi Road Jan. 8 through Jan. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Starting at 8:30 a.m., and continuing throughout the workday, there will be a single lane closure. As Kūhiō Highway is a two-lane road, the crew will use alternating traffic control to maintain access through the remaining available lane.

In addition to the single lane closure, there will be intermittent full closures starting from 9 a.m. The full closures will be from the top of the hour for 30 minutes at a time. Following the intermittent closures the single lane will be reopened to clear waiting vehicles under the alternating traffic control for 30 minutes. See the schedule below.

  • 8:30 a.m. – Single lane closure with alternating traffic while the crew mobilizes for the day
  • 9 a.m. – Full road closure to do rock scaling

  • 3:30 p.m. – Single lane closure with alternating traffic while the crew demobilize for the day
  • 4 p.m. – Both lanes of the highway reopen

During this daytime closure, slope stabilization involving rock scaling will be conducted above the highway. The closure of the mauka (mountain-facing) lane of the highway and intermittent full closures are necessary to make sure rocks do not fall on motorists/pedestrians during the removal.
