Update: Red flag warning canceled for leeward portions of Kaua‘i

Updated 7:43 a.m. on Tuesday: The National Weather Service has canceled the Red Flag Warning for the leeward areas of Kaua‘i County, effective 3:05 p.m., Nov. 14. 

Original post: The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for leeward areas of Kaua‘i County from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Although an area of showers is moving over the Hawaiian Islands this morning, it has not brought significant rainfall to leeward areas. Additionally, a drier air mass will move over the islands by this afternoon, increasing fire risk because of strong and gusty trade winds.

A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuel sources during the warning period could contribute to extreme fire behavior.

A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or will shortly. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

Because of the warning, the Kaua‘i Fire Department advises the following:

• Refrain from all outdoor burning, including cooking.
• Avoid the use of mechanized equipment outdoors, including yardwork equipment.
• Do not drive your vehicle in dry, tall grass. The underside of your vehicle is hot and can easily ignite grasses from your muffler.
• Ensure trailer chains do not drag on the ground.
• Be aware of wind direction and gusts that could spread fire rapidly.
• Have an escape route to a clear area safe from rapid-fire spread.
• Report any possible fires — including signs of smoke or flames — by calling Kaua‘i Police dispatch at 808-241-1711.
