Red flag warning goes into effect today for leeward portions of Kaua‘i

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for leeward areas of Kaua‘i from 10 a.m. today through 6 p.m. Nov. 6 as the combination of strong trade winds and low relative humidity will increase the risk of wildfires.

The warning area also includes South Shore areas such as Kōloa, Poʻipū and Māhāʻulepū.

The fire weather watch that was issued at the end of last week for the same areas is no longer in effect.

East winds of 15 to 30 mph, with gusts of up to 50 mph, are expected to reach their peak Monday. Relative humidity will reach its lowest level, forecast as low as 40%, during afternoon hours.

The combination of those strong winds, the low relative humidity and dry fuel sources will contribute to extreme fire behavior.

While a red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are happening or will, it does not predict new fire starts. However, any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

To prevent fires, the Kaua‘i Fire Department advises:

• Refrain from all outdoor burning, including cooking.
• Avoid the use of mechanized equipment outdoors, including the use of yardwork equipment.
• Do not drive your vehicle in dry, tall grass. The underside of your vehicle is hot and can easily ignite grasses from your exhaust muffler.
• Ensure trailer chains do not drag on the ground.
• Be aware of wind direction and gusts that could spread fire rapidly.
• Have an escape route to a clear area safe from rapid-fire spread.
• Report any possible fires — including signs of smoke or flames — by calling Kaua‘i Police Department dispatch at 808-241-1711.
