The public is reminded that products containing lithium batteries should not be disposed of with regular trash. When damaged, lithium batteries can cause fires.

Some products that contain lithium batteries include Bluetooth headsets, cellphones, computer peripherals, digital cameras, laptops, smartwatches and tablets.

Instead of throwing them away, items with lithium batteries can be taken to two locations on Kauaʻi.

Puhi Metals Recycling Center, located at 3951 Puhi Road, in Puhi is open 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For items such as toys or mobility devices that cannot be recycled at Puhi Metals, batteries should be removed and recycled at the Kaua‘i Resource Center, located at 3460 Ahukini Road in Līhuʻe. The center is open 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The lithium battery drop-off at the Kaua‘i Resource Center is for residents only.

For batteries larger than an e-bike battery, batteries from photovoltaic solar power systems or batteries from commercial activities, contact the manufacturer or a hazardous waste hauler for disposal options.
