University of Hawai‘i offers $1M in scholarships for aspiring teachers
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Education is encouraging future teachers to apply for nearly $1 million in scholarship stipends available through for the spring 2024 semester.
Recipients will be part of the seventh cohort of the Grow Our Own Teachers Initiative.
Grow Our Own stipends are available for students who have been admitted into the College of Education’s bachelor in elementary education and Hawaiian language immersion and master of education in teaching programs for fall 2023, and for students who are applying to the post-baccalaureate certificate in elementary education and post-baccalaureate certificate in secondary education programs for spring 2024.
Priority is given to applicants who are Hawaiʻi Department of Education employees (emergency hires, substitutes, educational assistants) in secondary and elementary school settings and those seeking licensure in Department of Education Federal Teacher Shortage Areas (English; English as second language; Hawaiian immersion, knowledge, language or studies; mathematics; science; world languages).
Applicants who are not Department of Education employees or seeking licensure in shortage areas are still eligible and encouraged to apply.
The seventh cohort of candidates will be eligible to apply for teacher licensure from the Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board upon graduation and will be required to teach full-time for at least three years for Department of Education or charter schools in the state.
The application deadline is Oct. 1, 2023 and can be completed online.
An informational session on Grow Our Own and other College of Education programs will be held on Sept. 19 at 4:30 p.m. Those interested can sign-up online to join.
