Maui wildfire updates: At least 1,000 people are unaccounted for following Lāhainā blaze
The death toll of the Lāhainā wildfire remains at 115, however, the FBI reports the number of people unaccounted for now looks to be between 1,000 and 1,100 as of Tuesday.
Three fires ripped through Maui on Aug. 8 burning several homes in Kula and turning 3.5 square miles of Lāhainā, including Front Street, into ash and twisted metal. Local, state and federal agencies have descended on the West Maui community to search for those victims who didn’t escape what some have called a “hurricane fire.”
With 100% of single-story residential properties searched in the disaster area, emergency responders continue to search multi-story residential and commercial properties for victims.
The Lāhainā fire is 90% contained with 2,170 acres burned. The Olinda blaze is 85% contained with 1,081 acres burned. The Kula fire is 85% contained with 202 acres scorched. While the containment percentages have not changed significantly over the past several days, the Maui Fire Department reassures the public that there are no “active fire threats” at this time.
