Kaua’i resident wins 2023 Kiwanis Kūpuna Spelling Bee

Kaua’i resident Lucy Douthitt took home the championship trophy during the 2023 Kiwanis Kūpuna Spelling Bee held at the Lanakila Multipurpose Center in Honolulu this weekend.

On July 29, the club hosted several rounds of spelling before Douthitt was deemed the champion and given a trophy and medal by Kiwanis Division 22 Lt. Governor John Buck.

Douthitt also received a gift certificate for a trip for two to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, as well as a 4-night stay at California Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.  She also received 30,000 airlines miles from Hawaiian Airlines.

Net proceeds from the Kiwanis Kūpuna Spelling Bee will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association – Hawai’i as part of its Longest Day fundraiser. 

Kiwanis acknowledges the event’s presenting sponsors Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, major sponsors California Hotel & Casino and Hale Ku’ike, as well as ‘Ohana sponsors Humana and KMR Group Foundation, and other supporters,  donors, and volunteers who helped Kiwanis to make the event possible.
