Case counts on Kaua‘i rose again this week, the 10th week in a row.
Officials urged elderly, young and vulnerable residents to exercise precaution against the virus, practices familiar with everyone now that the pandemic is well into its second year.
“The numbers show us the surge is still going up,” Mayor Derek Kawakami stated during the county’s weekly info briefing posted on Thursday, June 2.
New COVID-19 cases averaged 1,210 per day statewide this week. The Garden Isle averaged 71 new cases a day, up from 59 the week before. Kauai’s test positivity rate is 25%, above the state average of 18%. Those rates are assumed to be low, too, as they don’t include results from home test kits.
A female Kaua‘i resident in her 80s who was hospitalized died from COVID this week, the mayor said.
The Kaua‘i District Health Office is investigating a number of active clusters in various work places. A common theme with the clusters is that an employee with the virus but with mild symptoms came to work. Kawakami urged employees to practice safety precautions, including to keep social distance from others if unmasked and not to show up to work if ill. He also urged the elderly, young and vulnerable populations to be up-to-date on their vaccination and booster shots.
“Please encourage them to get boosted,” he said.
Free testing is still available. View the schedule here.
