Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami today filed his election papers, making his intention to run for re-election official.

Kawakami delivered his fourth State of the County Address earlier this month, reiterating his 2018 commitment to modernize antiquated government processes, improve aging infrastructure, and ensure that county associates had the tools needed to provide excellent customer service.

While much of Kawakami’s first term was focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, he provided a summary of his administration’s progress toward his goals and expressed his excitement to continue the hard work and to meet the challenges that lie ahead.

“If given the honor and privilege to serve another term, we will continue toward our goal: to care for what we have while investing in our future,” stated Kawakami.

Kawakami said he never would have imagined the additional responsibility that came with being Mayor during a global pandemic, but he is grateful that he was called to serve his community during the most challenging time in our recent history.

“I’ve said before and will say every day,” Kawakami said. “Being a husband. Being a father. Being your Mayor is the greatest blessing I have ever been bestowed. I don’t take any of my responsibilities for granted and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”
