The Hawai‘i State Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office reported two fatalities and 12 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, Dec. 13.
One of the fatalities was a Kaua‘i resident in his 60s who was hospitalized. The second was a past Kaua‘i death that has been determined to be COVID-related. This death was in a male resident in his 40s. This brings Kaua‘i COVID fatalities to 12 residents and two visitors.
“My heart goes out to the families, friends, and loved ones of these two individuals,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “We need to remain vigilant to keep our community safe, healthy, and avoid unnecessary tragedies this holiday season.”
Today’s cases are all residents. Of the 12 cases, four are children and eight are adults. All 12 cases are considered community-acquired. Eight of the community-acquired infections are close contacts of a previously announced case or are tied to an active cluster. The remaining four cases have no known source of infection, including one whom investigators have been unable to reach after repeated attempts or who has refused to provide information.
Today’s cases bring the number of active cases to 81, with seven hospitalized, and 3,355 cumulative cases. Kaua‘i’s cumulative case count includes 3,291 confirmed locally, eight probable, and 56 positive cases diagnosed elsewhere, as they received their pre-travel test results after arriving on island.
