State Officials Urge Residents to Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19

As of Thursday, May 27, 50% of Kaua‘i residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Mayor Derek SK Kawakami announced in Thursday’s bi-weekly COVID-19 update. Additionally, 57% have received one of the two required doses.

No new cases were reported on Thursday. There are currently four active cases with 10 individuals in quarantine. Kaua‘i has a cumulative case count of 361.

Kawakami was joined Thursday by Maj. Gen. Kenneth S. Hara, adjutant general, Hawai‘i Department of Defense. He thanked Kaua‘i residents for their sacrifices during the pandemic.

“Kaua‘i has been successful, and more importantly the entire state, because of your sacrifices,” Hara said.

Hara asked all Garden Island residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The vaccine is safe and effective,” he explained. “We’ve proven with millions of doses that the side effects are very mild and the risk of getting the severe symptoms of the disease is worse than the vaccine itself.”

Hara said the community must look at the benefits of getting vaccinated against the virus.

“As we talk about getting to herd immunity, you will see that many of our policy decisions will be linked to our vaccination status,” Hara said.

Again, he thanked Kaua‘i residents for their efforts in protecting their county.

“We’re almost there,” Hara said. “Let’s get through this together and look forward to opening our economy again.”
