Kaua‘i Kupuna Succumbs to COVID-19

The Hawai‘i State Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office reported Kaua‘i’s second fatality from COVID-19 on Thursday, April 22.

The fatality was an elderly female Kaua‘i resident who was hospitalized on O‘ahu.

“We are saddened to report the news of the second death of a Kaua‘i resident as a result of COVID-19,” said Mayor Derek SK Kawakami. “We extend our most sincere warmth, prayers, and aloha to the family and loved ones of the individual for this painful loss.”

Health officials also reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. One case is an adult female resident whose source of infection is related to inter-island travel. The other case is an adult female resident whose source of infection is considered community-acquired since no direct link to another case can be found.

All active cases are in isolation and close contacts are being identified, offered testing, and directed to quarantine. Investigations are ongoing.

Vaccination appointments are widely available for residents 16 and older. For details, visit Kauai.gov/vaccine. Those who plan to travel can protect themselves and their families by being fully vaccinated before traveling.

Today’s cases bring the number of active cases to eight, with 243 cumulative cases. Kaua‘i’s cumulative case count includes 208 confirmed locally, two probable, and 33 positive cases diagnosed elsewhere, as they received their pre-travel test results after arriving on island.
