Bird flu detected in samples collected at Līhuʻe Wastewater Treatment Plant

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported the newest eruptive activity in the Big Island volcano’s summit caldera began at about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, with a small lava flow exiting the north vent following low-level continuous lava spattering that started at about 5:40 a.m. from the same vent.

Hanalei man sentenced to 10 years for 2023 robbery of Bank of Hawaiʻi in Līhuʻe
Kauaʻi Police Department investigators revealed that on Nov. 23, 2023, 38-year-old Robert Monroy entered the bank on Rice Street, approached a bank teller and gave the teller a note saying he was robbing the bank. The note also said he had grenades and no one would get hurt if the teller handed over the money.
Kaua‘i forest bird rescue and recovery organizations joining forces in one facility
Hawai‘i Board of Land and Natural Resources members last week approved the cancellation of a 1955 executive order that paves the way for the former Hanapēpē Dog Pound site to become a shared facility for the Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project, Kaua‘i Endangered Seabird Recovery Project and Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi.

Wilcox nurses to strike for 3 days this week
The 159-member nursing team of the hospital, through the Hawaiʻi Nurses Association, notified Wilcox management Jan. 4 after voting to authorize a strike in a show of their disdain for rampant unfair labor practices. The strike begins at 7 a.m. Tuesday and continue until 6:59 a.m. Friday.
