Kaua‘i police offers new resource for residents to aid in crime investigations

The Kaua‘i Police Department is launching a new initiative to engage the community in strengthening safety and solving crimes.

City Protect is a program using technology that allows residents and businesses to voluntarily register their external security camera locations allowing law enforcement to view footage with their consent.

“Having this important information readily available will save valuable time and allow officers to move forward with their investigation more efficiently,” Kaua‘i police stated in a press release this morning.

Following a crime, officers often go door-to-door to seek any cameras in the area. This process is time-consuming and can delay the apprehension of the suspect at large.

“This program is designed to deter crime and promote public safety through a proactive partnership between residents, businesses and KPD,” said Lt. Stacy Perreira. “By participating, you can actively contribute to the safety and security of your neighborhood. Mahalo for your commitment to making Kaua‘i a safer place to live, work and thrive.”

Registration is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time.

The Kaua‘i Police Department will not have direct access to the security camera or the security camera system, nor are participants obligated to provide video footage if asked. Registration will simply inform law enforcement of the location of an existing device and build a working knowledge of the camera network within the community while respecting individual privacy.
